چکیده

Submitted to the NANOTUBE'04 Conference: Molecular dynamics study of catalytic ability of transition metals in nucleation process of SWNTs Yasushi Shibuta and Shigeo Maruyama Dept. of Mech. Eng. The University of Tokyo Contact e-mail: [email protected] Interaction between catalytic metals and carbon atoms on formation process of SWNTs are studied by the home-made multi-body potentials base on density functional theory calculations of small metal-carbon binary clusters. The Co cluster has a partially crystal structure where metal atoms are regularly allocated and embedded in the hexagonal carbon network. On the other hand, carbon atoms cover the entire surface of the Fe cluster. The number of hexagonal rings in the Co cluster increase about two times faster than in the Fe cluster. This implies stronger interaction between the graphitic lattice and Co atoms than Fe atoms. The difference of graphitization ability may reflect the ability as a catalyst on the formation process of SWNTs. Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Nucleation Process of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Nucleation process of single-walled carbon nanotubes by the catalytic chemical vapor deposition method is studied by classical molecular dynamics simulation. We start the calculation with randomly distributed carbon-source molecules and a nickel cluster to investigate the metal-catalyzed growth of a cap-structure of a nanotube. When the catalytic cluster reaches saturation with carbon atoms, he...

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Nucleation and Growth of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Developments of large scale and high-purity generation technique of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) [1] are desired for the practical applications of this fascinating new material. In addition to previously known laser-furnace [2] and arc-discharge [3] techniques, catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) methods [4] have been developed for the possible larger amount production with low...

Planar Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Au Clusters in Pushing Process

Based on the fact the manipulation of fine nanoclusters calls for more precise modeling, the aim of this paper is to conduct an atomistic investigation for interaction analysis of particle-substrate system for pushing and positioning purposes. In the present research, 2D molecular dynamics simulations have been used to investigate such behaviors. Performing the planar simulations can provide a ...

Generation of single-walled carbon nanotubes from alcohol and generation mechanism by molecular dynamics simulations.

Recent advances in high-purity and high-yield catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CVD) generation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) from alcohol are comprehensively presented and discussed on the basis of results obtained from both experimental and numerical investigations. We have uniquely adopted alcohol as a carbon feedstock, and this has resulted in high-quality, low-temperature sy...
